An Invitation To Faith – Choka Poem

The Choka (長歌 long poem) is:

  1. a narrative.
  2. syllabic. Composed of any number of couplets made up of alternating 5-7 onji (sound syllables) per line. In English we can only treat the onji as a syllable.
  3. unrhymed.
  4. concluded by a hanka, an envoy in the form of the waka, 31 onji or sound syllables in 5 lines with 5-7-5-7-7. “han” meaning repetition, the hanka is to summarize the Choka. The word tanka is often substituted for hanka or waka (they are all rooted in the same 31 syllable, 5 line form, their root seems to make them interchangeable with only subtle differences to separate them.)  Poetry Magnum Opus.

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt – Train Ticket – For today’s prompt you are going on a train ride. Choose either the journey itself as your focus (a classic mystery/crime drama to solve for example) or the destination. The train need not be of this reality and therefore it can take you anywhere including the after life! As to how you came by the train ticket that too can have mysterious origins.

train ticket arrives

from whence it came is unknown

intrigued to accept

ride is pre-reserved

date and time already booked

today, time is now

anxiously I hesitate

remember to breathe

destination is unknown

note with ticket says

board with faith don’t ask questions

again I pause, breathe

then step aboard waiting train

fear, not an option

train unseen by human eyes

unscabbed eyes awake

a new understanding dawns

solid foundation

that grew from a mustard seed

believing without seeing

When Sober Spirits Fly

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt – A Touch Of Frost

Inspiration for the prompt:  A Late Walk by Robert Frost

A Winter Walk....

A touch of frost

does my heart imbue

when sober spirits fly

beyond to what is unseen

Flailing every thought in my mind

causing each moment to be

like a hard days work

attempting to capture a breath…

Then, in a morn’s new mercy

the sober spirits return with

the heat of sun upon their wings

and melts my heart’s frost into

A love that ignites my hearth

and once again this soul is

insulated, protected from the

world’s brutal Winter.

Breakup Insanity

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompts – “Breakups”

Breakup Insanity

Breakup to makeup
again and again
a circle of insanity
that never seems to end

Lost in the chaos
refusing to let go
never moving on
to meet your true beau

Was it worth the heartache
the cost to your soul
the loss of friends
to end up all alone

The warning signs were there
but you chose not to see
even when others said beware
you chose not to flee

Now alone in your agony
learn this valuable lesson
there’s a greater love to seek
that comes down from heaven

It will never do you wrong
nor leave you feeling worthless
in your heart it will put a song
and lead you in the way righteous

Then a real love shall come your way
one that will see the beautiful in you
with an eternal promise to always stay
and remain steadfastly faithful and true

Temptation’s Wicked Tease – Sedoka Poem

MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt – “gasm”

For this week’s prompt I want you to write about something that often eludes description, pleasure.

The Sedoka is an unrhymed poem made up of two three-line katauta with the following syllable counts: 5/7/7, 5/7/7. A Sedoka, pair of katauta as a single poem, may address the same subject from differing perspectives.

Sensual pleasure
sweet, silky, smooth to the tongue
rapturously orgasmic

just for a moment
not an eternal treasure
but temptation’s wicked tease
